Rajshahi: With the theme ‘Knowledge Brings Liberation, the Foundation of the Future,’ the National Library Day was inaugurated at the premises of the Rajshahi Divisional Government Public Library. Additional Deputy Commissioner Tuktuk Talukdar inaugurated the day’s programs through the release of balloons and festoons.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, following the inauguration, a colorful rally was organized from the library premises. The rally paraded through the city’s important roads and concluded at the same venue. A discussion meeting, along with prize and certificate distribution, was held at the auditorium of the Divisional Government Public Library to mark the occasion.

Speaking as the chief guest at the meeting, Tuktuk Talukdar highlighted that in the present time people are no longer accustomed to holding books in their hands, and libraries are facing a severe shortage of readers. She noted that there was a time when libraries were full of readers, but now many libraries are deteriorating due to the lack of readership.

Talukdar emphasized that while the younger generation does read books, they mostly do so by downloading PDFs, listening to audiobooks, or using other digital platforms. Although they are gaining knowledge, they are missing the tactile experience of books, which no longer touch or connect with the heart. She added that humanity and values are gradually fading from society, potentially due to the shift away from books and reading habits.

The event underscored the importance of restoring the connection and bond with books. Talukdar advocated for the practice of gifting books to friends and loved ones, suggesting that by bringing books closer to our lives, our knowledge will increase and we will become more humane individuals.

The program was presided over by Md. Rokonuzzaman, Senior Librarian of the Rajshahi Government Public Library. Special guests included Mahbubul Alam, Librarian of RUET, and Zillur Rahman, Librarian of Rajshahi Medical College. At the end of the program, prizes and certificates were distributed among the winners of various competitions.
