Dhaka: Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed today stated that the interim government has attempted to maintain economic stability while addressing numerous challenges. He emphasized that although efforts have been made, the upcoming elected government will encounter significant economic hurdles.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Salehuddin made these remarks as the chief guest at Sonali Bank's Annual Conference 2026 held at the International Convention Center. He noted that while the reforms implemented by the interim government were insufficient, they would aid the subsequent administration. He stressed the need for more tactful handling of future challenges.
Dr Salehuddin advised Sonali Bank officials to uphold professionalism during the term of an elected government, noting that political pressure is inevitable. He urged the development of negotiation skills and a clear understanding of economic policies, banking laws, and audit norms to manage loan disbursement decisions effectively.
He also advocated for prioritizing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) over large businesses in loan allocations, highlighting their role in job creation. He pointed out that SMEs deserve more credit support as loans to large businesses carry higher risks.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur participated as a special guest. Sonali Bank Chairman Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury emphasized the need for increased autonomy under the bank's new PLC structure, advocating for the board to have authority over the appointment and removal of the managing director to ensure corporate governance.
Sonali Bank Managing Director Shawkat Ali Khan announced the bank's goal to reduce its default loan ratio to 10-12 percent this year and further to single digits next year. He added that once the non-performing loan ratio reaches 9 percent, the bank will focus on expanding export financing.
Finance Secretary Dr Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder and Financial Institutions Division Secretary Nazma Mobarek also addressed the inaugural session of the bank's annual conference. Sonali Bank Chairman Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury presided over the conference, which was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Finance and Sonali Bank.
