Dhaka: Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan today stated that the Bangladesh government has not dismissed the idea of participating in international cricket tournaments. Instead, the government is seeking alternative venues to ensure the safety of its players and spectators.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Khan clarified that Bangladesh is still interested in taking part in the Cricket World Cup and other ICC events, provided that suitable arrangements are made. He addressed reporters after a meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Economic Affairs at the Cabinet Division Conference Room at Bangladesh Secretariat.

The Adviser highlighted that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has previously arranged neutral venues for teams with security or political concerns. Citing India’s past refusal to play in Pakistan and the subsequent arrangement of matches in different countries, he stated, “Providing an alternative venue is nothing unusual.”

Khan emphasized that Bangladesh’s request is neither unprecedented nor unreasonable, as it aligns with existing international cricket practices. He explained that the decision stems from security concerns linked to political developments in host countries, referencing the exclusion of Bangladesh’s famed pacer, Mustafizur Rahman, from a previous event due to political pressures.

He affirmed, “Our position is based on ensuring the safety of our players and fans. This is a policy-based stand, not a political one.” The government’s priority remains the safety and security of Bangladeshi athletes competing abroad.

Khan expressed optimism that the ICC would address Bangladesh’s concerns according to established international practices, facilitating arrangements that allow the team to participate without compromising security.
