Dhaka: Russia has today handed over 30,000 tonnes of Muriate of Potash fertilizer to Bangladesh as a gift under the World Food Programme (WFP).

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Russia’s leading fertilizer producer Uralchem is providing the fertilizer as a gift to Bangladesh, as stated in an official release. The handing over was marked by a programme held at the BARC auditorium, attended by Agriculture and Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury as the chief guest and Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Bangladesh Alexander G. Khozin as the special guest. The event was chaired by the Secretary of the agriculture ministry, Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian.

The Agriculture Adviser noted that in the current global context, the supply of food and fertilizer has become a significant challenge. The impacts of climate change, instability in international markets, and various global crises are affecting the agricultural sector. In these circumstances, global cooperation and partnership are crucial.

He further elaborated that the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) currently holds a stock of 1.035 million metric tons of fertilizers, excluding urea, which is the highest stock since the organization’s establishment in 1961. The adviser also highlighted the significant progress achieved in the agricultural sector during the tenure of the current interim government.
