Sardah: Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today emphasized the impartial role of the police, stating that they are not protectors of any political party, as they are state employees funded by taxpayers’ money. He underscored that the primary responsibility of the police force is to serve the people and uphold the rule of law.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Affairs Adviser made these remarks during the passing-out ceremony of the 41st BCS probationary Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) at the Bangladesh Police Academy (BPA) in Sardah, where he served as the chief guest. He highlighted that peace cannot be achieved solely through the use of force without gaining public trust, particularly in the context of election-time responsibilities.
He assured that the police force is fully prepared to ensure that the upcoming national parliamentary election is conducted in a free, fair, and neutral manner, with about one lakh police personnel receiving special training for election security. The adviser instructed police officers to maintain strict neutrality during election duties and avoid any unethical benefits or hospitality. Any disorder at polling centers must be managed firmly following the advice of the Returning Officer, he added.
Jahangir Alam also addressed potential pressures and criticisms in professional life, stressing that honesty and patriotism are crucial in overcoming obstacles while fulfilling duties. He called for the development of a humane, courageous, and proud police force, free from corruption and bias, upholding the sacrifices of the people and the expectations of future generations.
During the ceremony, the Home Affairs Adviser distributed trophies to the best cadets in various disciplines. ASP Muhammad Sazzad Hossain was awarded best probationer, Mehedi Arif best academic, Sajib Hossain best in field activities, Mosleh Uddin Ahmed best in horsemanship, and Salman Faruque best shooter, following rigorous training that began on February 15 last year.
