Dhaka: Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Adviser Sharmeen S Murshid today called for building future Bangladesh being imbued with the spirit of July Uprising. She made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a programme titled ‘Atmo Anusandhan’, organised on the occasion of the inauguration of National Social Service Day 2026, at the Madhumati auditorium of Department of Social Services at Agargaon here.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Sharmeen emphasized the importance of the welfare-oriented services of the Ministry of Social Welfare in reaching neglected and underprivileged communities at the grassroots level. She stated that the ministry’s reputation would truly flourish only when these services are accessible to those in need.
Social Welfare Secretary Dr. Mohammad Abu Yusuf attended the event as the special guest, with Department of Social Services Director General Md Saidur Rahman Khan presiding over the event. Sharmeen highlighted that good governance is their primary goal, and efforts have been underway for the past one and a half years to restructure the ministry to achieve this.
Sharmeen noted that after assuming office, creating a database of genuine allowance recipients was a lengthy process. This initiative also involved rectifying longstanding errors to ensure that allowances reached rightful beneficiaries. She mentioned that about 80 percent of the beneficiary list has been completed and recipients are now regularly receiving their allowances.
Additionally, Sharmeen announced an initiative to create a database of orphan children in orphanages. This effort aims to properly manage and allocate orphanage capitation grants in a phased manner. The theme for this year’s Social Service Day was ‘With technology and compassion, welfare and equity; trust now lies in social service.’
Senior officials from the ministry and its departments or agencies were present at the event, underscoring the importance of coordinated efforts to achieve the ministry’s goals.
