Dhaka: Former adviser and July uprising leader Mahfuj Alam today expressed that the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to fortify public trust in Bangladesh’s democratic framework. “Tarique Rahman’s return after 17 years of exile is expected to strengthen trust and confidence in Bangladesh’s democracy,” Alam stated in a post on his verified Facebook account this afternoon.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Tarique Rahman’s homecoming signifies a pivotal moment for the nation’s democratic progression. Mahfuj Alam emphasized the Zia family’s longstanding commitment to sovereignty and democracy, urging that Rahman fulfills his promises to contribute to a sovereign and democratic polity. He concluded his message by warmly welcoming the BNP leader back to Bangladesh, writing, “Welcome home.”

Tarique Rahman arrived in his homeland after 17 years in exile. His journey concluded with a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from London, which landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 11:40 am via Sylhet. Upon arrival, Rahman received a warm reception and emotional greetings.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, along with party standing committee members, welcomed the acting chairman at the VVIP lounge of the airport. Tarique Rahman was embraced with smiles and handshakes. Following airport formalities, he embarked on a journey to the 36 Expressway (300-Foot Road) venue by bus, under tight security. Before departing, he touched the ground barefoot, grasped a fistful of soil, and emotionally brought it to his nose.

A motorcade escorted Tarique Rahman’s bus to the venue as millions lined the airport road, chanting slogans of welcome. Later, Rahman addressed thousands at the public event on the 36 Expressway, where he acknowledged the crowd’s unwavering support. Walking along the route to Evercare Hospital, he waved to his supporters, expressing gratitude for their steadfast encouragement.
