Dhaka: Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who was convicted and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) in a crimes against humanity case, has filed an appeal with the Appellate Division seeking his acquittal. The appeal was lodged with the concerned wing of the apex court on December 17.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the ICT-1 had previously sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death on November 17, 2025. They were found guilty under the doctrine of superior command responsibility for crimes committed during the July Mass Uprising. In contrast, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun received a five-year sentence due to his cooperation with investigators and his full disclosure of events as an approver.
The tribunal’s judgment also included orders for the confiscation of all properties owned by Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. It directed that these properties be turned over to the state. Additionally, the authorities were instructed to provide compensation to the families of those who died and were injured during the July uprising.
