Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan announced today that the government is committed to implementing all necessary measures to ensure the professional and social welfare of journalists. She highlighted the importance of enacting appropriate laws and regulations to support this initiative, speaking at a cheque distribution ceremony held at the Information Building on Circuit House Road in the capital.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizwana, who also serves as the adviser for environment, forest, climate change, and water resources, stressed the significance of responsible journalism in a democratic society. She stated that free and fair elections are crucial for democracy, and responsible journalism based on national interest is equally vital. Rizwana urged journalists to fulfill their duties with a sense of responsibility to protect the interests of the public.
The distribution of financial assistance to journalists was part of the government's democratic commitment, she noted. Rizwana also instructed the authorities to consider direct bank transfers for such assistance in the future, reinforcing the government's dedication to creating an environment where journalists can operate independently and without interference.
The event, chaired by Mohammad Abdullah, Managing Director of the Bangladesh Journalists' Welfare Trust, was attended by several notable figures, including Dr. Mohammad Altaf-ul-Alam, Additional Secretary (Broadcast and Press) of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and Director Generals from various departments such as Bangladesh Betar, the Department of Mass Communication, and the Department of Films and Publications.
During the ceremony, a total of Taka 10.1 million in financial assistance was distributed. This included Taka 0.6 million to the families of two deceased journalists, Taka 6.9 million for the medical expenses of 114 journalists, and Taka 2.6 million to support 52 financially distressed journalists.
Following the event, Adviser Rizwana visited several institutions, including the Department of Mass Communication, the Department of Films and Publications, the Film Certification Board, the Bangladesh Journalists' Welfare Trust, and the Press Institute Bangladesh.
