Dhaka: President Mohammed Shahabuddin today urged all to work together to build a prosperous Bangladesh, free from discrimination and all forms of oppression. The President made the call in a message issued on the occasion of the great ‘Victory Day’.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, President Shahabuddin emphasized that December 16 marks the nation’s great ‘Victory Day’, which stands as a symbol of national pride and the culmination of the country’s struggle for independence. He highlighted that independence is Bangladesh’s greatest achievement, rooted in a long history of exploitation, deprivation, and struggle, and celebrated the attainment of freedom and sovereignty on this historic day in 1971 after a nine-month-long, bloody Liberation War.

On this day, President Shahabuddin paid his deepest respect to the valiant martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the war, the wounded freedom fighters, and the mothers and sisters who suffered great losses. He also recognized the families of the martyrs and all courageous individuals who dedicated their efforts to the cause of independence.

President Shahabuddin noted that the aim of the Liberation War extended beyond political independence to include establishing economic emancipation and social justice. He acknowledged that even after five decades, complete political and socio-economic freedom remains unachieved. The President pointed out that the student-led mass uprising of 2024 has revived hope for building a just Bangladesh, free from discrimination and corruption.

He stressed the importance of ensuring that the true benefits of independence reach every citizen by strengthening and institutionalizing democracy. He called for cultivating a culture of tolerance, mutual respect, and unity at every level of personal, social, and national life. Inspired by the spirit of the great Liberation War, President Shahabuddin urged everyone to commit to working together to build a prosperous Bangladesh, free from discrimination and all forms of oppression, as a pledge on this glorious ‘Victory Day’.

On this joyous occasion, he extended his warmest greetings and heartfelt congratulations to all Bangladeshis living at home and abroad.
