Dhaka: Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan emphasized the importance of viewing Bangladesh’s historic events as a unified trajectory rather than contradictory occurrences. He spoke at a discussion held at the Student-Teacher Center (TSC) auditorium in observance of Martyred Intellectuals’ Day.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan highlighted the significance of the events from 1952, 1969, 1971, 1990, and 2024, stating that these have collectively shaped Bangladesh’s national identity. He urged the nation to remain vigilant against political efforts aimed at creating divisions by pitting these historic events against each other.

The discussion was attended by DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Professor Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Shahid Gias Uddin Ahmed’s sister Professor Sajeda Banu, and others, including Shamsuzzaman Dudu and DUCSU Vice President Abu Sadiq Kayem. The event also saw participation from deans, department heads, directors, proctors, and other university staff.

A one-minute silence was observed at the beginning of the program to honor the martyrs. Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan underscored that the sacrifice of the martyred intellectuals serves as the foundation of national unity and identity, reinforcing the strength of the nation’s collective memory.

He noted that Bangladesh is in a transitional phase where the memory of the martyrs can inspire unity. Professor Khan urged all, including professionals like teachers, doctors, and journalists, to fulfill their duties responsibly as a tribute to the martyrs.

To mark the day, black flags were raised on key university buildings, and wreaths were laid at several memorials and graveyards under Professor Khan’s leadership. Prayers for the departed souls were held across various university halls, mosques, and places of worship.
