Rangpur: The youth of the nation have sent a powerful message for change through the 2024 July uprising, emphasizing the need for a transformation in political culture as a prerequisite for achieving true democratic progress and preventing any authoritarian rule. This sentiment was echoed by participants at a round table discussion held at a local hotel in the city, organized by the district and metropolitan units of Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SUJAN).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event, titled 'Fair Elections and Democratic Transition: Citizens Thoughts,' was chaired by SUJAN Rangpur district committee President Principal Khandaker Fakhrul Anam Benju and moderated by its Rangpur metropolitan committee's Publicity and Publication Secretary Farhaduzzaman Faruk. A diverse group of individuals, including representatives from civil society, students, teachers, lawyers, journalists, cultural activists, professionals, and political leaders, participated in the discussion.
General Secretary of SUJAN Rangpur district committee, Nasima Amin, presented a concept paper highlighting the concerns surrounding the current political environment. Participants voiced their apprehension that without political consensus and trust, the country risks reverting to an outdated governance system. They stressed the necessity for a new constitutional framework, one that is inclusive and ensures accountability and public welfare, to prevent the rise of authoritarian systems.
Speakers at the event emphasized the crucial role of an informed and organized civil society in sustaining democracy. They called for the cooperation of political parties, the strengthening of constitutional organizations, and a neutral stance from the Election Commission and administrative bodies to facilitate fair elections. Discussions also covered topics such as democracy, good governance, reforms, human rights, and maintaining a balance of power.
The participants highlighted the need for changes in the current political culture and economic system, advocating for administrative reforms and anti-corruption measures. Young voters expressed a desire to work towards realizing the aspirations of the people, drawing inspiration from the great liberation war of 1971 and the student-people mass uprising of July-August 2024, to propel Bangladesh toward a more equitable and developed future.
