Jashore: A court here today sentenced two brothers, Osman Gani and Ali Hossain, to death for the murder of their cousin in Jhikargachha upazila of the district in 2023. The verdict was delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Jewel Adhikari, who announced the decision in the presence of the convicts.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the convicts, sons of the late Sabed Ali Sardar from Chhota Podaulia village in Shankarpur union, were found guilty of killing their cousin, Kamrul Amin. The court also acquitted Khadija Khatun, Osman Gani’s wife, as the charges against her were not proven, stated Additional Public Prosecutor Azizul Islam.
The prosecution detailed that a long-standing land dispute existed between Kamrul Amin and his cousins, Osman Gani and Ali Hossain. On September 7, 2023, as Kamrul attempted to construct a boundary wall on his property, an argument escalated between him and the brothers. The confrontation turned violent when Osman and Ali Hossain attacked Kamrul with sharp weapons, critically injuring him before fleeing the scene.
Kamrul was rushed to Jessore General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Following this, Kamrul’s brother, Ruhul Amin Sardar, filed a murder case at Jhikargachha Police Station, implicating Osman Gani, his wife Khadija Khatun, and Ali Hossain.
Subsequently, on July 3, 2024, Sub-Inspector Boni Israel of Jhikargachha Police Station submitted the charge sheet to the court. In addition to the death sentence, the court imposed a fine of Taka 10,000 on each convict.
