Dhaka: The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has released a special directive extending the deadline for individual taxpayers to submit their income tax returns for the tax year 2025-26. The new deadline is now set at December 31, 2025, providing taxpayers with an additional month to comply.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the NBR has also issued an order to assist taxpayers facing registration issues with the mandatory e-return system. Those affected are advised to apply to their respective Deputy Commissioners of Taxes by December 15, 2025, with specific justification for their inability to submit online returns.
This year, the NBR has mandated online filing for all individual taxpayers, with exemptions for senior citizens aged 65 years or above, physically disabled or specially-abled individuals, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, legal representatives for deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in the country. However, the exempted categories are still permitted to file e-returns voluntarily if they choose to do so.
Authorized representatives are also allowed to submit e-returns online. For Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, online filing is not compulsory, but they are encouraged to register for the e-return system. By sending their passport number, NID number, and email address to the designated email, they can receive OTP and registration links, enabling them to file returns online.
The NBR has simplified the e-return process by allowing taxpayers to enter accurate information on income, expenditure, assets, and liabilities without uploading documents. Tax payments can be made using various digital methods, and taxpayers can instantly download their acknowledgement slips and tax certificates. This system is gaining popularity among both domestic and international taxpayers.
To facilitate the transition to online filing, the NBR has provided training sessions for general taxpayers and authorized representatives like income tax lawyers, chartered accountants, and chartered secretaries. Additionally, a call center has been established to provide immediate assistance, and issues can be reported through the eTax Service on the NBR's website.
The NBR encourages all individual taxpayers to utilize the e-return system by the new deadline. To date, over 1.8 million taxpayers have successfully filed their e-returns for this year.
