Dhaka: Education Adviser Professor Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar today highlighted the pivotal role played by students in liberating campuses during the July mass uprising, declaring that their sacrifices have ushered the nation into a new era.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Abrar made these remarks while presiding over the second convocation of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU). He emphasized that the nation, after enduring a decade and a half of repression, now stands on the threshold of a vibrant and liberated environment. The courage and leadership exhibited by the younger generation and university students in combating fascism will be forever etched in the annals of the country’s history.
The event commenced with a solemn tribute to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement, the 1971 Liberation War, and the 2024 mass uprising. Attendees also paid homage to Hajee Mohammad Danesh, a prominent figure in the anti-British Tebhaga movement, after whom the university is named. Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman addressed the gathering as the convocation speaker, joined by dignitaries such as Professor Dr. Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan from the University Grants Commission, and HSTU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. Enamullah, among others.
Over eight thousand students, including those receiving undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD degrees, participated in the ceremony. Professor Abrar commended the students’ courage and patriotism in overcoming the oppressive policies of fascist regimes, underscoring that their actions remain an unparalleled example in history.
He also discussed the government’s initiatives aimed at positioning Bangladesh prominently on the global stage through quality higher education and research. Despite limited resources, he noted, the interim government has undertaken significant measures to advance research development.
Professor Abrar called upon educators to enhance research efforts, actively engage students, and lead the quest for new knowledge. He stressed the necessity of responsibility, honesty, and integrity in all educational and research endeavors, urging the new graduates to embrace their role as pioneers in national development, democracy, and the creation of a humane society.
