Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today expressed deep sorrow over the casualties and damage caused by a strong earthquake that struck the country in the morning. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the earthquake," Fakhrul said in a post on his verified Facebook page.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul addressed the nation, emphasizing the importance of safety and vigilance. He expressed condolences for those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. In his message, he prayed for the protection of the nation and urged everyone to remain alert and cautious. He also provided several precautionary measures to enhance public awareness.
Fakhrul advised that if indoors during an earthquake, individuals should drop, cover, and hold on under a sturdy table or desk, avoiding windows, glass, doors, heavy cupboards, and gas or fire sources. He cautioned against using elevators during such events. For those outdoors, he recommended staying away from buildings, trees, electric wires, and signboards, and suggested standing in an open area while keeping their head low.
For individuals inside vehicles, Fakhrul suggested stopping the car in a safe spot away from bridges, overpasses, buildings, or trees, and remaining inside until the shaking subsides. After the tremor, he advised checking gas, electric, and water lines, avoiding elevators, inspecting buildings for potential damage before exiting, and ensuring the safety of all family members. He also reminded the public to be prepared for aftershocks.
