Dhaka: Mutual cooperation between Bangladesh and Pakistan police academies will be increased, announced Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury during a meeting with Pakistan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Haider at the Secretariat.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting addressed various subjects of mutual interest, focusing on enhancing cooperation and capacity building between the police forces of both countries, as well as the extradition of criminals. A press release from the Home Ministry stated that the discussions also included the potential signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to formalize the cooperation between the police academies.
The Home Adviser emphasized the historical and spiritual ties between Bangladesh and Pakistan, highlighting the recent visit of the Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry to Pakistan in late September, which he believes has further solidified bilateral relations.
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury noted the absence of a legal framework for the mutual exchange or extradition of criminals, acknowledging that previous attempts to establish such an agreement in 2004 were not realized. He assured that new initiatives would be pursued to sign an agreement on this matter.
The High Commissioner expressed Pakistan’s interest in assisting with the procurement of armored security vehicles, drones, and agricultural mechanization for the Bangladesh Police. The meeting was attended by Additional Secretary (Political) of the Ministry of Home Affairs Khandaker Md. Mahbubur Rahman and Counselor of the Pakistan Embassy Kamran Dhangal, among others.
