Dhaka: Members of the Nationalist Lawyers Forum Dhaka Bar today organized a celebratory procession at the Dhaka lower court, distributing sweetmeats in response to the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) verdict that sentenced ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July-August 2024 mass uprising.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the procession was initiated by members of the Nationalist Lawyers Forum in the Dhaka Judge Court area at around 3 pm. The route of the procession included stops at the Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, and concluded in front of the lawyers' association.
The ICT-1 convicted and sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death, finding them guilty under the doctrine of superior command responsibility for their roles in the July Mass Uprising. The three-member panel of judges, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, delivered the verdict after reviewing multiple charges against the accused.
Additionally, the tribunal found former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun guilty. However, he received a "lenient sentence" of five years' imprisonment due to his cooperation with investigators and full disclosure of events as an approver.
