Gazipur: 'Nabanna', an age-old Bengali festival observed during the harvest of new aman crops, was celebrated with festivity at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) today. The festival marks the first day of the Bengali month of Agrahayan, with "Agra" meaning "first" and "hayan" meaning "month".
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, BRRI director general Dr. Mohammad Khalequzzaman inaugurated the 'Nabanna' festival as the chief guest. The event began with the release of balloons in front of the BRRI administration building. Following the inauguration, Dr. Khalequzzaman participated in paddy harvesting alongside other guests, marking the ceremonial start of the festival.
A colorful rally was organized, parading through various streets of the BRRI headquarters. The celebrations continued with a brief discussion at the BRRI auditorium, where Dr. Khalequzzaman attended as the chief guest and Principal Scientific Officer Dr. M Ibrahim chaired the function.
Special guests at the function included BRRI director (research) Dr. M Rafiqul Islam and BRRI DG's spouse, Farzia Ahmed Simmi. Additionally, BRRI scientists, officials, employees, and workers' representatives shared their thoughts on the occasion. The festivities concluded with the distribution of traditional treats, 'pitha' and rice pudding (kheer), among all attendees.
