Dhaka: The government is actively implementing measures to ensure an adequate food supply across the country, as stated by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed. He emphasized that the country's food security status is comparatively better than in several neighboring nations.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Salehuddin made these remarks in response to reporters' inquiries following two separate meetings of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase and the Advisers Council Committee on Economic Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat. He highlighted that the government remains vigilant and is closely monitoring the situation to maintain a balanced food supply and prevent shortages.
The Finance Adviser explained that the government is taking proactive steps to ensure sufficient stockpiles, making predictions and adjustments based on market trends. Efforts are underway to secure rice stocks, with slight price adjustments being made to maintain supply, stabilize the market, and protect farmers' interests.
Dr Salehuddin also mentioned that rice procurement forms part of a broader strategy to prevent hoarding by middlemen or mill owners. He noted the risk of stockpiles remaining in private hands if the government does not purchase rice directly, which could disrupt availability. The government is striving to manage the situation effectively, acknowledging that achieving perfection is a gradual process.
These remarks from the Adviser coincide with ongoing governmental efforts to balance food distribution, maintain adequate stock levels, and safeguard farmers' livelihoods, while ensuring that essential food items remain accessible to ordinary citizens.
