Dhaka: Adviser to the Ministry of Shipping and the Ministry of Labour and Employment Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hussain has stated that the government is gearing up to finalize a comprehensive national strategy, known as the 'National Port Strategy,' aimed at the sustainable development of the country's land, river, and sea ports.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Sakhawat made these remarks at a stakeholder consultation meeting in the capital, organized by the Ministry of Shipping and supported by the Government of Japan and JICA, to finalize the Bangladesh National Port Strategy 2025. Dr. M. Sakhawat Hussain confirmed that the drafting of the National Port Strategy is nearing completion and is expected to be finalized within this year, with implementation set to begin in January next year.
Dr. Hussain emphasized that leading global ports are advancing through digitalization, which is attracting increasing foreign investment. He noted that the government initiated the development of the National Port Strategy to draw more domestic and foreign investment in the maritime sector and ensure effective port management.
Highlighting the objectives of the strategy, the Shipping Adviser pointed out that the plan aims to establish a coordinated and modern port infrastructure. A maritime single window will be introduced to streamline port-centric services, offering businesses hassle-free services promptly. He remarked that the strategy marks the beginning of a new chapter in the country's port management.
The strategy also focuses on synchronizing the operations of sea ports, inland river ports, and land ports for cohesive and efficient port activities. Dr. Hussain expressed optimism about the transformative potential of the strategy for the country's maritime sector.
Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping, Dr. Nurun Nahar Chowdhury, who presided over the meeting, acknowledged the support from the Government of Japan and JICA in the strategy's development. She noted that the National Port Strategy would unlock new opportunities for modern port management.
Remarks were also delivered by the Chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority, Rear Admiral S. M. Moniruzzaman, acting as the focal person. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Shipping and heads of various departments and agencies under the ministry.
