Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) has announced its plan to complete all necessary preparations for the upcoming general elections within the month of November. Senior Secretary to the EC, Akhter Ahmed, emphasized this objective while speaking to journalists outside his office at the Nirbachon Bhaban.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ahmed highlighted that the EC had been lagging in two specific areas: engaging in dialogue with political parties and registering election observers. Addressing these issues is part of the EC's strategy to ensure readiness for the elections.
Ahmed also mentioned the matter of electoral constituencies in the Bagerhat district, noting that the commission is awaiting the certified copy of a High Court verdict before proceeding with further steps. This pending document is essential for the commission to finalize its actions regarding the matter.
The EC Secretary outlined new regulations concerning the code of conduct for political parties and candidates, specifying that no more than three motorcycles could be used during election meetings. Additionally, while postering and the use of plastic items have been banned, festoons and leaflets are permissible under certain prescribed rules.
Ahmed further stated that candidates running with a political party's nomination must sign an agreement to comply with the EC's code of conduct. Independent candidates are required to provide a personal commitment to the commission to adhere to these regulations.
Addressing inquiries about a potential referendum, Ahmed said that neither he nor the commission had received any instructions on the matter. Furthermore, the commission has taken significant decisions related to law and order in recent meetings, with plans to review the progress at the end of the month.
The overarching aim of the EC is to foster a conducive environment for announcing the election schedule early next month, following the completion of all preparatory steps for the general elections.
