Chattogram: Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk-e-Azam (Bir Pratik) has emphasized the pivotal role of cooperatives in Bangladesh's economic and social development. He highlighted the potential for achieving sustainable development through collective efforts and stressed the importance of mutual trust, faith, and unity among members to enhance the strength of the country's cooperatives.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Faruk-e-Azam made these remarks while addressing a discussion at the Chattogram Shishu Academy auditorium as the chief guest on the occasion of the 54th National Cooperative Day. The event, organized by the District Cooperative Department, was preceded by a rally in the city. This year, the day is being observed across the country with the theme "Cooperatives will build the country through equality and equity."
Faruk-e-Azam noted the long history of cooperatives in Bangladesh, tracing back to the establishment of the Cooperative Social Bank in Paikgachha, Jessore district in 1909. He emphasized the need to involve youth and women in the cooperative movement to foster its growth. He mentioned that the aspirations for change set in July should be reflected in this movement, and highlighted the importance of women's participation for their economic prosperity and self-reliance.
Furthermore, he pointed out that involving farmers and a cross-section of people with cooperatives would strengthen the local economy. The event also featured speeches from Joint Registrar of the National Cooperative Office-Chattogram Mohammad Dulal Mia, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Md. Ziauddin, and Chittagong District Cooperative Officer Md. Mosleh Uddin, among others.
