Dhaka: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today underscored the importance of ensuring care and protection for animals in zoos, emphasizing it as a moral obligation. "Proper care and protection of zoo animals must be ensured. Conservation of endangered species of animals should be prioritized to make a positive contribution to the animal kingdom," she stated.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Adviser made these comments during a view-exchange meeting at the Interpretation Centre of Bangladesh National Zoo in Mirpur, following her visit to the zoo. Highlighting the significance of the Bangladesh National Zoo as a national asset that reflects the country's civilization, culture, and values, Farida expressed the desire to develop a zoo that is beautiful, educational, and entertaining for all.
She also addressed the behavior of visitors, noting that many often tease animals out of excitement, and urged zoo authorities to implement effective measures to curb such actions. Farida called on visitors to be more aware and considerate during their visits.
Discussing modernization efforts, Farida indicated that resolving the zoos' challenges permanently is not feasible without modernization. She disclosed ongoing efforts to implement the 'Bangladesh National Zoo and Rangpur Zoo Modernization Project,' which includes a Taka 40 crore allocation to address urgent needs in the zoos.
The Adviser also stressed the necessity of fully implementing the Animal Welfare Act 2019 across all zoos. The event was presided over by Department of Livestock Services Director General Dr Md Abu Sufiun, with Bangladesh National Zoo Director Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Talukder, DLS Director Dr Md Bayzer Rahman, and Central Poultry Farm Director Zinat Sultana in attendance.
