Dhaka: Shireen Parveen Haque, head of the Women's Affairs Reform Commission, emphasized the necessity of strong political will to ensure fair wages and dignity for domestic workers. She articulated her views during a shadow parliament session focused on the protection of domestic workers' rights. The event was jointly organized by the Debate for Democracy and Gonoshakkhorota Ovijan at the BFDC.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shireen Parveen advocated for the appointment of an independent ombudsman to establish accountability within the domestic work sector. She expressed optimism that future governments would prioritize this appointment alongside the development of a legal framework to safeguard the rights of domestic workers.
Shireen Parveen also highlighted the importance of avoiding disrespectful terms like "Bua" when referring to domestic workers. She suggested that implementing a registration system for domestic workers would aid in their social recognition and the establishment of their rights.
The event received support from NETZ Bangladesh and Education Out Loud, with Debate for Democracy Chairman Hassan Ahamed Chowdhury Kiron presiding over the function.
