Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has called for a thorough investigation into the fire that engulfed a garment factory and chemical warehouse at Shialbari in Mirpur, resulting in 16 fatalities and multiple injuries.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the chief adviser was informed of the fire while in Rome for the World Food Forum (WFF), organized by the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO). Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, speaking from Rome, conveyed Prof Yunus’s shock and condolences to the victims’ families. Prof Yunus emphasized the need for accountability and reiterated support for the affected families.
The fire reportedly began at the chemical warehouse and then spread to the Anwar Fashion Garments Factory and Shah Alam Chemical Warehouse. Firefighters recovered 16 bodies and sent them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while eight others sustained injuries, with three receiving treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Social Welfare Adviser Sharmeen Soneya Murshid visited the site, pledging to hold those responsible accountable and advocating for the relocation of chemical warehouses from densely populated areas. Meanwhile, Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) Brigadier General Muhammad Jahed Kamal urged the public to oppose illegal chemical warehouses and seek administrative assistance for their removal.
The FSCD’s Hazmat team assessed the warehouse to identify the smoke source and ensure safety measures. FSCD Assistant Director Kazi Nuzmuzzaman stated that the warehouse was locked during the fire, suggesting no one was inside. The investigation continues as efforts to fully control the blaze persist.
