Muscat: Eight Bangladeshi expatriate workers were killed in a road accident in Oman this afternoon while traveling to the sea for fishing.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, "Nine Bangladeshis, including the driver, were heading towards Dukum Sidra, about 650 kilometers from Muscat, in a microbus when the accident occurred," said Asadul Haque, First Secretary (Labour) at the Bangladesh Embassy in Muscat. He communicated this information to BSS over the phone in the evening.
The vehicle collided with a large fishing container truck on the road, resulting in the deaths of eight Bangladeshi workers while the driver sustained critical injuries. The injured driver was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, Haque stated.
The accident happened around 3:00 pm local time. The identities of the deceased have yet to be officially confirmed, though it is believed that most of them hailed from Sandwip upazila in the Chattogram district.
An official from the Bangladesh Embassy in Muscat has arrived at the accident site to provide necessary assistance. The bodies of the deceased have been placed in various hospitals in the area. The embassy plans to take necessary measures to repatriate the bodies to Bangladesh following due procedures.
