Dhaka: Land Adviser Ali Imam Majumder emphasized the critical importance of protecting agricultural land, underscoring its role not only in production but also as a cornerstone of livelihood, culture, and the economy. The adviser highlighted that safeguarding arable land has become a significant national challenge.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Majumder's comments came during a draft review meeting on the "Land Zoning and Agricultural Land Protection Ordinance, 2025" at the land ministry's conference room. He pointed out that the reduction of arable land is primarily due to uncontrolled urbanization, industrialization, and the expansion of infrastructure. As a response, land zoning is being seen as an effective and ethical approach to ensure the protection and proper use of arable land.
Majumder noted that the land ministry is moving forward with the ordinance to address the reduction and misuse of arable land in Bangladesh. The ordinance aims to balance environmental concerns, protect arable land, and ensure food security through planned land zoning. He stressed that safeguarding arable land is not just an administrative duty but a critical factor for national sustainable development.
The ordinance proposes 14 categories of land zoning, ensuring that all arable land is protected. It also includes provisions for fines and imprisonment for unauthorized use of arable land. The government is prioritizing the swift implementation of this ordinance.
The meeting was attended by Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Housing and Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, and Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, who participated as special guests. Senior Secretary of the Land Ministry ASM Saleh and other senior officials were also present.
