Two Accused in Bagerhat Journalist Murder Case Arrested from Dhaka

Dhaka: The DB (Detective Branch) police have arrested two individuals in connection with the murder of journalist SM Hayat Uddin in Bagerhat, police confirmed on Monday. The apprehended suspects are Md. Omar Faruk alias Emon Howlader and Md. Ashiqul Islam, both aged 25, from Gopalkathi village in Bagerhat Sadar.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the DB police conducted the arrests at room no. 118 on the fourth floor of the New Golden City Residential Hotel located in the Ashulia Palli Bidyut area under Ashulia police station in Dhaka on Sunday night. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of DB Shariful Islam led the operation targeting the alleged perpetrators of journalist Hayat Uddin's murder. Following their arrest, the suspects were presented in court where they provided confessional statements, as confirmed by OC Mahmud-ul-Hasan of Bagerhat Model Police Station.

Furthermore, Additional Superintendent of Police Mohidul Islam expressed optimism about the potential apprehension of five more individuals implicated in the murder. SM Hayat Uddin, associated with the daily Bhorer Chetna, was tragically hacked to death by assailants at a teastall near Harikhali School intersection on the evening of August 3.

In response to the tragic incident, journalists across print and electronic media, along with press clubs from nine upazilas in the district, organized a human chain, urging the immediate arrest of all those involved in the murder of journalist Hayat.
