Dhaka: A court here today sent Iftarul Hassan alias Swapon, chairman of Dakkhin Dighaldi union of Bhola, to jail in connection with a case lodged against him under the anti-terrorism act. Swapon, nephew of Awami League leader Tofail Ahmed, was arrested from the Gulbagh area under Shahjahanpur thana in the capital today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, police produced him before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) and prayed for his confinement in jail until the end of the investigation of the case. Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah ordered his detention after hearing the petition submitted by the prosecution side.
The prosecution stated that leaders and activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League and Bangladesh Awami League organized an anti-government procession from Malibagh rail gate to the Mouchak area on May 18. They allegedly planned the procession to destabilize the government and public security by launching subversive activities.
