New york: Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam today announced that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, during his ongoing visit to the United States, will inform the international community about Bangladesh’s upcoming general elections, which are scheduled for the first half of February next year. “Of course, the next general elections will be held in the first half of February,” Alam stated while briefing reporters on the outcomes of the second day of the chief adviser’s New York visit.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Yunus is set to address the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 26. Alam elaborated that the chief adviser will communicate to the world the reforms undertaken by the Bangladesh interim government over the past 14 months and the recovery of the country’s economy. Prof Yunus will also emphasize the initiatives taken for Bangladesh’s democratic transition.

“The main message is that a fundamental election is going to be held within February 15. It will be a free, fair, peaceful, credible, and festive one,” Alam conveyed. He further noted that global leaders have already assured the interim government of their full support for Bangladesh’s election process.

Citing recent elections at Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU), Alam expressed confidence that the people of Bangladesh will exercise their voting rights in the upcoming general elections, ensuring they are free and fair. In response to a query, he mentioned that in his UNGA speech, the chief adviser will highlight the government’s accomplishments over the last 14 months, election preparations, and other significant issues like the Rohingya crisis.

Alam also addressed questions about the interim government’s relationship with political parties, stating that there is no distance between them, as the government continues to hold meetings with various parties. Commenting on the Awami League’s past actions, he criticized the party, indicating that they have committed various misdeeds during their tenure. “In the July-August period of 2024, we have seen what the Awami League can do. In the 15 years of the AL reign, we have observed how they can kill and disappear people and how fake cases can be filed against thousands of individuals,” Alam remarked. He concluded by noting the diminished standing of the Awami League, asserting, “See now where is their (AL) position…now they have no friends.”
