Chattogram: Chief Adviser’s special assistant Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb today emphasized the critical role of effective waste classification, composite waste management, and a penalty system in achieving sustainable waste management solutions. He made these remarks as the chief guest at the “Cleanliness Awareness Campaign-2025,” an event jointly organized by Chittagong Independent University (CIU), Youngone Corporation, and the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), held at the CIU auditorium.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Faiz Ahmad underscored the national priority of proper waste and garbage management, especially in densely populated urban areas. He promoted adherence to the three core principles of sustainable waste management: reduce, reuse, and recycle. He also highlighted the necessity of classifying waste into perishable and non-perishable categories as foundational steps towards sustainability.
Faiz praised Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus as a “global environment ambassador,” linking Yunus’s “Three Zero” theory-particularly the goal of zero carbon emissions-to effective long-term waste management solutions. He described Chattogram as a key heritage city in South Asia, emphasizing the importance of maintaining its cleanliness for national pride and foreign investment attraction.
During the event, Taiyeb applauded the Chattogram community’s support for government initiatives addressing water-logging and called for increased public involvement in development activities. He urged the CCC to enhance revenue generation and implement a penalty system for littering to maintain civic discipline.
CCC Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain addressed bureaucratic hurdles delaying essential CCC projects, particularly those concerning waste and drainage management. He stated that adequate funding, preferably through grants, is crucial for addressing the city’s drainage challenges.
The mayor also highlighted CCC’s ongoing initiatives, including school-level health awareness programs and incentives for waste segregation, rewarding citizens for proper waste disposal. Kihak Sung, Chairman and CEO of Korean Export Processing Zone, pledged support for Chattogram’s cleanliness programs, linking cleanliness to public health, investment opportunities, and national image.
The event featured a colorful procession starting from the CIU campus, culminating with speeches from various dignitaries, including CIU Board of Trustee Member Syed Mahmudul Haque, CIU Business School faculty member Prof. Mosleh Uddin Chowdhury Khaled, Chattogram Development Authority Chairman Eng. Nourul Karim, and Daily Azadi Editor M A Malek.
