Chattogram: A Chattogram court today acquitted city mayor and former city unit BNP president Dr. Shahadat Hossain in three cases filed against him during the previous Awami League government. Additional Metropolitan and Session Judge Abdur Raman passed the acquittal order, exempting the incumbent mayor from cases registered as Special Tribunal 525/20, 526/20, and 331/25.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court based its decision on recommendations from the law wing of the Ministry of Law and Parliamentary Affairs, which reviewed the merit and intent of the cases. The court's decision marks a significant development in the legal proceedings that have been ongoing for years.
Speaking to reporters, Dr. Shahadat Hossain expressed satisfaction over the verdict, stating, "Justice has finally been upheld through the court's decision. These cases were filed during the previous government to suppress democratic activities and politically target opposition leaders, including me." His statement reflects relief and a sense of vindication after a prolonged legal battle.
Advocate A. Kamrul Islam Chowdhury Sazzad, representing Dr. Shahadat, commented that the cases were part of political harassment. His remarks echo the sentiments of many who viewed the cases as politically motivated attempts to undermine opposition leadership.
Chattogram District Bar Association President Advocate Abdus Satter, former president Advocate Enamul Haque, and Metropolitan PP Advocate Mofizul Haque Buiyan appeared in court to file the acquittal petition. Their presence underscores the importance and high-profile nature of the legal proceedings and the subsequent acquittal.
