Dhaka: Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Adviser Asif Mahmud Sojib Bhuiyan today announced that the government is diligently working towards achieving self-reliance in the country's health sector. 'Our health system was dependent on one country. After coming out from there, we are working to achieve self-reliance in the country's health sector,' he stated during a press conference at his ministry.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser revealed that China has proposed setting up international standard hospitals in the country. The government is currently considering these proposals, which, if implemented, could significantly alleviate health-related issues. Addressing the ongoing treatment of Health Affairs Adviser Nurjahan Begum in Singapore, he mentioned her long-standing health complications and emphasized that her situation should be viewed from a humanitarian perspective.
The adviser further discussed the shortage of doctors in public hospitals, noting that the process of recruiting additional physicians through a special BCS is ongoing and expected to conclude soon. He also inaugurated 11 buildings dedicated to medical services under the Urban Primary Healthcare Services Delivery Project managed by the local government ministry.
The project aims to provide free quality medical care to disadvantaged women, children, and pregnant women, despite the presence of various hospitals. Local Government Secretary Rezaul Maksud Zahedi, Chief Engineer of LGED Anwar Hossain, and other senior officials were present at the event. Under the project, three urban maternity centers and eight urban health centers have been constructed across different regions including Mymensingh City Corporation, Gazipur City Corporation, and various municipalities.
