Dhaka: A court here today sent Motazzerul Islam Mithu, the mastermind of corruption in the health sector during the Awami League (AL) regime, to jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Acting Judge of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court Md Ibrahim Mia ordered Mithu’s incarceration after he was presented before the court in relation to the corruption charges.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mithu was apprehended by a team from the DB-Wari Division during a late-night raid in Gulshan, the capital’s affluent district. The arrest occurred around 11 pm on Wednesday, following which the ACC brought him before the court with a request for a 10-day remand. Mithu’s lawyer, however, sought bail for his client.

The court, after considering both the remand request and the bail plea, scheduled a hearing for September 18 to address the petitions. The case against Mithu, accusing him of accumulating Tk 75 crore beyond known income sources, was filed by ACC Deputy Director Md Saiduzzaman on September 10.
