Dhaka: A court here today ordered a ban on the departure of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 286 others who were chargesheeted in a case filed for participating in anti-state activities and plotting to overthrow the interim government. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order upon a petition of the investigation officer of the case, Assistant Superintendent of Police of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Md. Enamul Haque.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court also directed the investigation officer to submit a report regarding the arrest of the fugitive accused in the case on October 9, as the investigation agency missed the deadline slated for today. The case involves multiple individuals, including US Awami League chapter Vice President Dr. Rabbi Alam, Joybangla Brigade member Kabirul Islam, Advocate Kamrul Islam, and several others, who have been chargesheeted.

The case details reveal that on December 19 last year, a group expressed their determination to form the “Joy Bangla Brigade” in an online meeting and pledged to support Sheikh Hasina in becoming Prime Minister against a civil war. The meeting was attended by 577 participants, both locally and internationally, who unanimously agreed to follow Sheikh Hasina’s instructions.

Voice recordings from the meeting allegedly captured discussions between Sheikh Hasina, the meeting host, co-host, and various participants, indicating intentions to disrupt the government’s ability to govern peacefully. The meeting was described as containing elements of treason, with declarations to incite a civil war to overthrow the current government.

CID Assistant Superintendent of Police Md. Enamul Haque filed the case on March 27, 2025, with approval from the Home Ministry, charging Sheikh Hasina and 73 others with treason. Following an investigation, a charge sheet was filed against Sheikh Hasina and 286 others in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam, who accepted the charge sheet and issued arrest warrants for all accused.
