ACC Files Corruption Case Against Former Chattogram MP and His Wife

Chattogram: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated legal proceedings against a former Awami League (AL) parliamentarian and his spouse, accusing them of accumulating and holding assets and properties illicitly by exploiting power and engaging in criminal misconduct.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, ACC Assistant Director Mohammad Abdul Malek lodged two distinct cases against Didarul Alam, the former lawmaker from the Chattogram-4 constituency (Sitakunda), and his wife, Ismat Ara Begum, at the ACC Chattogram District Integrated Office-1. The filing took place on Thursday.



The case documents indicate that Didarul Alam amassed assets valued at approximately Taka 13.82 crore, while his wife, Ismat Ara Begum, acquired illicit wealth amounting to around Taka 1.47 crore, both beyond their legitimate income sources. It was further disclosed by ACC Deputy Director Subel Ahmed from the Chattogram District Integrated Office-1 that Ismat Ara Begum accumulated this wealth with her husband’s assistance, which was not reported in her wealth statement.



Subel Ahmed further elaborated to journalists that Didarul Alam had acquired and possessed illegal assets and properties worth about Taka 13.82 crore through power abuse and criminal misconduct. Additionally, he deposited Taka 475.98 crore into his 20 bank accounts and withdrew Taka 472.90 crore, failing to disclose the income source for transactions amounting to Taka 948.88 crore.
