Sunamganj: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today emphasized the government’s dedication to safeguarding the nation’s fisheries and biodiversity. During her visit to the Dhala area in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj district, she reiterated the government’s stance on enforcing strict measures against the illegal use of nets and fishing during the breeding season.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser inspected the operations of a mobile court conducted by the district administration, which resulted in the jailing of five fishermen for using illegal nets. These individuals were sentenced to 150 days in jail under section 5(1) of the Fish Protection and Conservation Act-1950 (amended).
Farida Akhter also commended the efforts of the local administration and law enforcement agencies, highlighting their role in fisheries protection. She called for public cooperation to further these conservation efforts. Present at the event were Director General of the Fisheries Directorate Dr. Md Abdur Rouf, Joint Secretary of the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Shahina Ferdausi, Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj Mohammad Ferdaus Miah, and other relevant officials.
