Dhaka: The recordings of the statement and cross-examination of the state approver, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, in a case against Sheikh Hasina and two others, have concluded here today. The International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder, has scheduled September 8 for recording the statements of other witnesses in the case.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the tribunal has already recorded and cross-examined statements from 35 prosecution witnesses related to the same case. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and Prosecutor Gazi M H Tamim represented the state, alongside other prosecutors present at the tribunal.
State-appointed counselor Advocate Amir Hossain represented the fugitive accused, Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, while Advocate Zayed Bin Amjad appeared for the arrested former IGP, who has turned state approver in the case. The ICT-1 had previously framed charges on July 10 against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former IGP Chowdhury Mamun.
At a certain point during the trial, the tribunal approved former IGP Mamun's request to become a state approver. In addition to the current case, two more cases are pending against the former prime minister with the tribunal. These cases involve allegations of enforced disappearances and killings during her government's tenure and the events at Shapla Chattar during a Hefajat-e-Islam rally on May 5, 2013.
