Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has condemned the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, urging the government to launch a lawful investigation into the violent incident that occurred in the capital's Kakrail area. He also extended his heartfelt wishes for Nur's swift recovery in a post on his verified Facebook page at 2:45 am (Bangladesh time) on Friday.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the BNP acting chairman stated that his party strongly condemns the attack on Nurul Haque Nur and the violent incident in Kakrail. He emphasized the significance of the current period in the country's journey towards a democratic transition, with the national election being the first milestone. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that such destabilizing incidents do not recur and that the path of democratic advancement remains unobstructed.
Rahman mentioned that all democratic stakeholders, including the BNP and its allies, must exercise restraint and tolerance. He stressed the importance of prioritizing the true spirit of last year's mass uprising. He further emphasized the necessity of taking the country out of mob rule and the prevailing state of unrest, advocating for vigilance against the culture of mob violence, upholding the rule of law, and building a peaceful and stable nation.
He concluded by stating that success as a united nation can only be achieved by empowering the people through democratic means and ensuring justice, equality, and dignity for all. The BNP acting chairman called upon the government to conduct a legal investigation into the incident against Nur and wished him an early recovery.
