Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today emphasized the importance of consistent democratic practices to ensure accountability among elected officials, stating that there is no alternative to democracy for advancing the country. Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled “Social Security: How does it secure?” organized by the Arpon Alok Foundation at the Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club, Fakhrul highlighted the critical role of elections in maintaining accountability.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul criticized the Awami League, alleging that their governance over the past 15 years has been detrimental to the nation. He expressed skepticism about solving all issues within a short period, advocating instead for a sustained commitment to democratic practices as a means to address the country’s ongoing challenges. Fakhrul underscored that social security is intertwined with the state structure and social systems, both of which currently face significant complexities.
Fakhrul further elaborated on the difficulties posed by the current social system, mentioning the challenges faced by citizens, such as a school teacher needing to travel to Dhaka to resolve issues. He noted that persistent irregularity and discrimination make it difficult to achieve rapid change. However, he remained hopeful about the efforts made by interim government advisers and the reform commissions, which he believes could lead Bangladesh toward a more equitable future.
He also stressed the need for a representative government formed through free and fair elections, which would establish systems of accountability, ultimately benefiting various sectors such as education, health, employment, and production. Fakhrul concluded that the manner in which elected representatives govern post-election has far-reaching implications for the nation’s development.
The event was conducted by Arpon Alok Foundation founder Bithika Binte Hossain, with other notable speakers including Bobby Hajjaj, Chairman of the Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM), and Zonayed Saki, Chief Coordinator of the Ganosanhati Andolan.
