Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today affirmed that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will remain steadfast in supporting the families of individuals who have disappeared over the past 15 years under Sheikh Hasina's administration, until justice is served.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul declared, "There can be no crime more horrific than enforced disappearance. It is a crime completely against humanity and the punishment for such a crime is the death penalty." He emphasized that his party has been, and will continue to be, involved in the movement for justice for the victims of enforced disappearances.
Fakhrul expressed these sentiments while inaugurating a human chain and exhibition dedicated to the victims of enforced disappearances. The event was organized by Mayer Daak (Call of the Mother), a group representing the families of those who have allegedly been disappeared by government agencies since the Awami League took power in 2009, at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka.
He called for full disclosure of information regarding the victims and those responsible for their disappearances. Fakhrul asserted, "No matter who the perpetrators are, no matter how powerful they may be, they must be brought to light."
Directly accusing Sheikh Hasina, Fakhrul stated, "It is now proven that Hasina is responsible for these murders and disappearances. She must be tried in this country and receive the maximum punishment." He encouraged the affected families to remain hopeful, insisting that "people's movements never fail."
Fakhrul also underscored the necessity of an elected government to ensure fair trials, asserting that the BNP is committed to pursuing elections to facilitate justice for the victims.
