Khulna: The Martyr (Shahid) Mir Mugdho Inter-Discipline Football Tournament 2025 has officially begun at Khulna University (KU) today on the field in front of the under-construction Fourth Academic Building. Organised by the Department of Physical Education, Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. Md Rezaul Karim inaugurated the event as the chief guest.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, in his opening remarks, the VC emphasized the importance of sports in maintaining both physical and mental health for students. He noted that football is deeply embedded in the national and cultural fabric of the country. He urged all participants to maintain discipline on the field and respect the decisions of referees.
He further highlighted that the tournament is being organized for the second consecutive year in memory of Shahid Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho, a KU student who was martyred during the July mass uprising. ‘I hope the tournament will be competitive and entertaining for the audiences,’ he added.
Following the inauguration, the VC interacted with the players of both teams, exchanging greetings and pleasantries. The event was presided over by Acting Registrar and Director (Additional Duty) of the Department of Physical Education, Professor Dr. S.M. Mahbubur Rahman. Professor Dr. Md. Nazmus Sadat, Director of Student Affairs, was present as the special guest.
Among the speakers were Himel from the Bangla Discipline and Mamun from the Soil, Water and Environment Discipline. The ceremony was conducted by Deputy Director Md. Moinul Islam, and another Deputy Director, S.M. Zakir Hossain, along with teachers, students, officials, and staff from various university disciplines, attended the event.
In the opening match, the defending champion Bangla Discipline triumphed over the Soil, Water and Environment Discipline with a 2-0 victory. Both goals were scored by player Ashiq, who was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ title.
