Dhaka: Bangladeshi interim government’s Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, announced plans to hold national elections in February 2026, prior to Ramadan. This will be the first election since the mass uprising that led to the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year.

According to Nam News Network, Yunus stated his intention to formally request the Election Commission to organize the upcoming general election. In a televised speech marking the anniversary of the July Uprising, Yunus emphasized the significance of this election as a critical step towards transitioning power to an elected government.

Yunus highlighted the importance of this phase in Bangladesh’s political landscape, expressing confidence in the country’s move towards democratic governance. The announcement comes as a pivotal moment for Bangladesh, signaling a shift towards re-establishing electoral processes and governmental stability.
