Dhaka: Bangladesh will hold elections in February 2026, interim leader Muhammad Yunus has announced. This will mark the first electoral event since a significant uprising led to the overthrow of the previous government last year.
According to TRTworld.com, Muhammad Yunus stated that he will formally request the Chief Election Commissioner to arrange the election before Ramadan in February 2026. This announcement was made during a broadcast commemorating the one-year anniversary of the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Yunus, who is 85 years old, is currently serving as the chief adviser of the caretaker government. He has committed to stepping down following the upcoming elections. Yunus assured that the interim government will provide all necessary support to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free and peaceful manner.
