Dhaka: The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has announced that the submission of income tax returns online is now mandatory for all individual taxpayers in the country. This new regulation applies to everyone except senior citizens aged 65 or older, individuals who are physically incapable or have special needs (subject to certification), Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, and the legal representatives of deceased taxpayers.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the NBR issued a press release stating that starting from August 4, 2025, individual taxpayers will be required to submit their tax returns for the 2025-26 tax year through the NBR's e-return platform, accessible at. The specified exempted categories will still have the option to submit their returns using paper forms if they prefer.
The press release further highlighted that any taxpayer facing technical challenges with online registration may apply in writing, providing valid justification to the concerned Deputy Commissioner of Taxes. With the approval of the Additional or Joint Commissioner of Taxes, these taxpayers may be permitted to file paper returns. The deadline for such applications is set for October 31, 2025.
Last year, the NBR began requiring mandatory online return submission for specific groups, including taxpayers under certain jurisdictions, bank employees, and employees of selected multinational companies. Over 1.7 million taxpayers filed their returns online as a result of this initiative.
Additionally, the NBR has informed that taxpayers can conveniently pay their taxes from home using bank transfers, debit or credit cards, bKash, Rocket, Nagad, or other mobile financial service applications while filing their returns online.
To support this transition, the NBR has deployed dedicated teams to provide round-the-clock assistance through its call center and other electronic support channels, ensuring that any issues faced by taxpayers during the online filing process are promptly addressed.
