Dhaka: The Government of Saudi Arabia has pledged Tk 244 crore as a grant for the construction of eight iconic mosques in Bangladesh. The announcement was made by the Saudi Ambassador, Dr Abdullah Jafar H bin Abiyyah, during a courtesy visit to the Religious Affairs Adviser, Dr AFM Khalid Hossain, at the Secretariat office.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Religious Affairs Adviser confirmed that the construction of the mosques, funded by Saudi Arabia, would commence promptly. He noted that proposals for land have already been received from several divisions, and discussions are underway with relevant authorities to finalize the remaining locations.
Highlighting the strong bilateral ties between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia, Dr AFM Khalid Hossain emphasized the significant contribution of approximately 3.2 million Bangladeshis residing in Saudi Arabia through remittances. He also acknowledged the crucial role of Bangladeshi workers in supporting Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.
The Adviser expressed hope for further strengthening of the bilateral relationship in the future. He extended his gratitude to the Saudi Government and the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah for the efficient Hajj management this year and proposed several improvements for next year's arrangements. These proposals included increasing the number of washrooms in Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah, ensuring uninterrupted utilities, and providing larger beds in Mina tents.
Dr Abdullah Jafar H bin Abiyyah assured that he would convey these proposals to his government and the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. He also committed to enhancing Saudi Arabia's development cooperation with Bangladesh.
The meeting also covered discussions on strengthening bilateral relations, the implementation of RFID tags for Hajj pilgrims' luggage, the establishment of an Arabic Language Institute in Dhaka, and other mutual interests. The meeting was attended by Religious Affairs Secretary AKM Aftab Hossain Pramanik and Joint Secretary (Hajj Division) Dr Md Manjurul Haque.
