Dhaka: BNP has accused supporters of Sheikh Hasina of executing a premeditated attack on National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders, aiming to undermine the country's democratic process. This allegation was made during BNP's standing committee meeting on Wednesday night, as stated in a press release signed by party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman led the meeting, which was attended by standing committee members including Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, among others. The attendees expressed concerns that political parties must proceed with caution in determining their programs to prevent anti-democratic forces from exploiting the situation.
BNP condemned the reported attack by Awami League supporters on the NCP rally in Gopalganj. The party believes the attack was an effort to hinder the democratic process, asserting that the actions of Hasina's supporters were intended to obstruct the efforts of NCP, a significant contributor to the anti-fascist movement.
The meeting also noted that the imposition of Section 144 and curfew by the government was viewed as a strategy to disrupt the democratic process. BNP suspects that certain groups aim to destabilize law and order to prevent the scheduled national elections in February and to cast doubt on their legitimacy.
The standing committee members expressed their dismay over recent statements from some political parties unfairly linking BNP to the murders in the Mitford area. Additionally, they condemned derogatory remarks made against figures such as Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, which have incited widespread anger.
In response, BNP has called for adherence to political decorum and has strongly denounced these activities.
