Dhaka: The government has launched a combing operation across the country in response to worsening law and order conditions in various regions. “All identified criminals will be brought under the purview of the law during the drive,” stated Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. The operation began following a meeting of the advisory council on law and order at the secretariat.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Adviser emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring fair trials and exemplary punishment for those involved in nationwide criminal activities, including a recent murder in Old Dhaka’s Mitford area. The government has prioritized the Mitford murder case, with seven of the 19 accused already arrested. Intelligence agencies are actively working to apprehend the remaining suspects.
Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury reiterated that the government does not differentiate criminals based on political affiliations, stating, “No criminal will be spared r
egardless of their political affiliation. No criminal will get shelter.” He also sought cooperation from the media and the public.
Efforts are underway to transfer the Mitford murder case to the Speedy Trial Tribunal to expedite proceedings. The Home Adviser described the incident as a significant concern, emphasizing that such events should not occur in a civilized society. The government is also investigating whether there was any negligence by law enforcement agencies and administration in the case.
Regarding preparations for the upcoming general election, Jahangir noted that law enforcement agencies aim to complete their preparations by December. He added that other stakeholders, including the election commission, administration, and candidates, would fulfill their respective roles, with the Election Commission announcing the election schedule in due course.
