Chittagong: The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has awarded a 'Certificate of Appreciation' to Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) ship 'BCGT Promatto' (Tug) and its crew for their significant contribution to extinguishing a fire on an oil tanker at the Chittagong Port, marking a first in Bangladesh's history.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the recognition was confirmed by Lieutenant Commander Harun-ur-Rashid, Media Officer, BCG Headquarters. He highlighted that this is the first time Bangladesh has received such an honor from the IMO, representing a major international recognition for the country. The accolade is not only a matter of pride for the Bangladesh Coast Guard but also for the nation, demonstrating the BCG's capability to manage disasters efficiently and courageously.
A severe fire occurred on the crude oil tanker 'MT Banglar Shourabh', owned by Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, on October 5, 2024. The tanker was anchored outside the Chittagong Port when the fire broke out. The BCG ship 'BCGT Promatto' (Tug) played a crucial role in providing immediate firefighting assistance and preventing a potential marine environmental disaster.
During the incident, a massive explosion and subsequent fire posed a severe threat to marine life and the environment. The BCG promptly initiated an emergency rescue operation, and 'BCGT Promatto' with its skilled crew conducted a high-risk operation to control the fire.
The Coast Guard successfully rescued 48 crew members from the tanker and managed to extinguish the fire despite challenging stormy weather and strong currents. The IMO authorities acknowledged the professionalism, efficiency, and environmental protection efforts demonstrated by the BCG during this operation.
Harun emphasized that the Bangladesh Coast Guard remains committed to ensuring maritime security, rescuing individuals in distress, preventing marine pollution, and protecting the environment. He assured that the force would continue to uphold the country's sovereignty and responsibilities in line with international standards.
